Monday in Alameda, San Rafael, and Larkspur

Today I braved 101 south, 580 west, 80 west, and 880 west then south to go to Alameda to visit Chris! It was great to finally get over there and see their "new" apartment as well as to take in the glorious views of the bay! I like the way things Chris has decorated the rooms, and I LOVE her project room - wow! (Oh, and the tomatoes are funny!)

Chris and I walked over to the AlamedaTowne Centre (also called the South Shore Center) and had lunch at a fabulous Greek restaurant known as Zeytini.

We splurged and started with an appetizer: Brushetta Trio, which they describe as "A delicious sampling on grilled Italian bread - tomato with basil , artichoke and sundried tomatoes, and calamari mistro (the calamari was a bit too fishy for me!). For the actual meal Chris had the chicken and pasta lunch special and I had a 1/2 chicken with warm roasted potatoes in a green salad. It was different, but very tasty.

We split some Baklava, a "traditional Turkish dessert made with phyllo dough and walnuts" for dessert, which they served with an amazing raspberry sauce. We had some great conversation which I found SO REFRESHING and we spent over an hour at our sunny table in the restaurant. Thankfully, they didn't shoo us out and we finally left when we were good and ready.

When we returned to the apartment I was treated to the sight of the birds walking around eating tasty tidbits as the tide went out. Then three largeflocks of birds flew by just above the surface of the water. There were also some brown pelicans out there -- all I can say is, "What HUGE wings!"

Chris and I walked out to the sidewalk and we were chatting when a car pulled up and a man got out and spoke to Chris (it turns out he lives upstairs - Leonard?). He expressed his condolences to her and then gave her a half a dozen white roses and a card...amazingly thoughtful and, to me, such a random act of kindness. Rich and Chris are obviously well-loved by their neighbors!

The drive back on the freeways was harrying, but thankfully, successful. I headed for the Salvation Army Thrift Shop in San Rafael and saw some of my old friends (i.e. the people who work there). I was only looking for a picture to hang here in the townhouse, but everything I liked was $35 and more -- too much! So I ended up buying an Ellery Queen collection of 63 short mysteries and a Feng Shui "chic" book and calling it a day for shopping.

Barry had an appointment at 24-hour fitness (my cost: $8 a month/his cost: $4 a month) at 6pm so we hopped over to Larkspur (6 miles down 101) for that.

(I got in trouble for taking pictures!)

I enjoyed some chamomile tea with honey at the Marin Brewing Company Brewery across the way and did logic puzzles.

We ended our day with a yummy steak dinner prepared by the "birthday boy" and then we watched Rush Hour 3 with Jackie Chan, Chris Tucker, and some pretty amazing scenes on the Eiffel Tower - wow!
